Full Time Courses

Level 1 Foundation Construction Award

Duration: One year.

Entry requirements: There are no formal academic requirements for these courses; however evidence, from school or other sources, of a commitment to learn and
work co-operatively will help you gain a place. This is in addition to the standard college entry requirements for the programme you have chosen.

Study: You will study one of the following trades:

  • Brickwork
  • Carpentry
  • Painting & Decorating.

You will learn the basic skills necessary to enable you to have an understanding of your chosen trade. You will also study Health & Safety and key skills as well as some IT.

Assessment: You will be assessed by completing practical tasks in a workshop which reflects industry standards. Your knowledge will be tested via oral and written test papers.

Afterwards: You can either progress to the Intermediate Construction Award in your selected area or, if you become employed, you can study for an NVQ Level 2 on a day release course.

Additional Information: You will also study the key skills of communications and/or number, as used in the construction industry. These are essential in progressing to further courses or employment. You must be ready to make a commitment to improve your level of skill in these subjects, alongside developing skills in your chosen trade.

Costs: Materials necessary for this course will cost around £175.

 

Level 2 Maintenance Construction Award Intermediate

Duration: One year.

Entry requirements: you need to have successfully completed a Level 1 construction course or to have achieved four GCSEs at grade D or above and have evidence of an aptitude for practical work. Adult students should be able to show evidence of some experience or aptitude in related fields of work.

Study: This course will allow you to develop skills across a number of construction trades to a level suitable for employment on general maintenance tasks. The trades covered will include:

  • Brickwork
  • Carpentry & Joinery
  • Painting & Decorating
  • Plumbing

You will also study related health and safety and key skills.
 

Assessment: Through practical activities in realistic workshops. Your knowledge will be tested via oral and written test papers.

Afterwards: You could progress from this course to a specialist course in any of the appropriate trades, to an apprenticeship in mantenance, or employment in a wide variety of sectors such as large retail outlets, hospitals, schools etc.

Additional Information: Your programme of study will include communications and/or number key skills, as related the construction industry. These are vital for progression to employment or an Apprenticeship. You should be prepared to commit to improving your level of key skills alongside gaining skills in the trade subject.
