Catering & Hospitality: Level 1 & Level 2 NVQ

Duration: One year at Level 1 followed by one year at
Level 2

Entry requirements: For Level 1 you will need four GCSEs at grade E. For Level 2 you need four GCSEs at grade D. We
are also looking for enthusiasm and the ability to work with people as part of a team. N the case of mature applicants, a satisfactory employer’s reference and a keen interest in the subject will be required.

Study: Students will spend much of their time working in the training kitchen, to provide a realistic working environment for learning. All students will study food preparation and restaurant service, as well as related theory.

Assessment: Assessment is integrated into your course. You will assessed both during practical work, in the kitchen and café ad by unit tests and through the building of a portfolio.

Afterwards: On successful completion of Level 1 you may wish to progress to Level 2. Those successfully completing Level 2 can progress to a further related qualification or develop their skills in employment within the catering industry. They can also return to Sussex Downs College for study at Level 3 as an advanced chef or for a supervisory role in food service. Opportunities for employment at all levels are god and would include work in restaurants, hotels, hospitals, schools, contract catering and many more.

Costs: You will need to buy chef’s whites and a set of knives. Approximate costs will be £170. For details of requirements and suppliers will be given at interview. Contributions to the materials costs of these courses are approximately £60 per year.
